Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell has called on the State Government to provide funding to solve the issues around a disused landfill in Port Fairy.
In Parliament this week, Ms Britnell called on Minister for the Environment Lily D’Ambrosio to use money from the sustainability fund to clean up a former landfill site which is at risk of spilling into the ocean.
She said it was being left up to the Moyne Shire to try and fix the problem.
“The problem is – while the Moyne Shire has a plan to fix the problem, they don’t have the financial capability to action their plan,” Ms Britnell said.
“There has been money spent, by both the council and the government, but they are short-term fixes. How many more millions will need to be spent on short term fixes? We need to do the job once and do it properly.
“No one knows what is buried in those dunes – it is a throwback to times when we didn’t take environmental concerns into the consideration we do now. Everything was simply dumped in landfill.
“The Government has $500 million sitting in the sustainability fund. Rather than propping up the budget bottom line, it should be spent on project which improve environmental outcomes. “In my mind, stopping unknown rubbish spilling into the ocean and spoiling one of Victoria’s best beaches is the perfect project to spend this money on.”
