“This road has been called the mad mile for as long as I can remember. It’s got that name for a reason.
“There have been issues with this section of road for a long time with residents in the area reporting regular near-misses to me.
“As Koroit, Port Fairy and Warrnambool grow things will only get worse. We also have more freight being transported and increased tourist traffic to Tower Hill and areas further along the highway. It all adds up and ultimately means more vehicles are using the road.
“We need to take a long term view to ensure there is appropriate infrastructure that not only improves road safety now, but takes into account future needs of road users.
“If duplication between Warrnambool and Port Fairy is the best way to do it then so be it – but we should also be looking at altered line markings, wider verges and new slip ways to allow for safe turning into the lanes and roads that run off that section of highway.”
