Passengers from Portland and Heywood will enjoy reduced travel times to and from Melbourne under a Liberal plan to bring European-style fast rail to the Warrnambool line.
Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell said the $19 billion statewide plan would slash travel times between Warrnambool and Melbourne to just one hour and 52 minutes, with trains travelling up to 200 kilometres an hour.
“At the moment Passengers from Portland and Heywood face a five to six hour trip with early starts and late finishes,” she said.
“Under our plan that will be slashed in half.
“Every single regional rail line in Victoria will be upgraded, increasing permittable speeds and slashing travel times.
“It makes travelling to Melbourne easier and more realistic for people beyond Warrnambool.”
Mrs Britnell said The Liberals have a vision to build a state of cities and not be a city-state focused on Melbourne, like the Labor Government is.
“To build a state of cities we need to build European-style High Speed Rail connecting our regional centres and we need to grow regional jobs,” she said.
“This is visionary policy – While others will want to focus on the past we are looking to the future, and planning to build the infrastructure South West Coast and Victoria needs to grow.”
