Hospital needs funding, not a talk fest

An advisory panel set up to attract money for the upgrade of the Warrnambool Base Hospital is a token effort from the State Government to make it look like it supports the upgrade, Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell says.

An advisory panel has been set up to help attract funding for the stage two redevelopment of the hospital, which will re-build the emergency department and operating theatres.

Mrs Britnell said the panel was an unnecessary level of bureaucracy.

“We know what needs doing; we know what it’s going to cost, what we don’t need is another drawn out talk fest,” she said

“The upgrade needs to happen now, figures show the demand for services at the hospital is increasing, it has been growing year-on-year.

“The departments earmarked for upgrade are the heart of any hospital, at the moment the hard working doctors and nurses are dealing with cramped and unsuitable spaces. It’s putting an unnecessary burden on their important work.”

Mrs Britnell said the state Government has the ability to fully fund the project now, and that’s what it should be doing.

“This advisory panel will add extra time to the redevelopment process, placing further pressure on emergency and theatre waiting times as the demand for services continues to grow,” she said.

“Labor must match the commitment the Coalition has already made and fund this vital redevelopment now.”
