Petition launched to fight for better passenger rail
Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell has joined with state and federal Liberal MPs from across the region to push for greater state and federal investment in passenger rail.
Mrs Britnell along with Federal MPs Sarah Henderson (Corangamite) and Dan Tehan (Wannon), and state MPs, Andrew Katos (South Barwon), Simon Ramsay (Western Victoria) and Richard Riordan (Polwarth) have launched an online petition to support their campaign.
The MPs are calling for more funding to urgently fix the Warrnambool/Geelong rail line. This includes more daily services for Warrnambool and Colac through to Melbourne.
The $3.65m Regional Rail Link has proved to be a short term fix only and is almost at capacity with services becoming increasingly slow and over-crowded.
The MPs have also raised concerns about the lack of planning for the duplication of the rail line between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds which is essential to providing extra and faster services through to Warrnambool. Despite $1m from the Turnbull Government for this rail duplication, the Andrews Labor Government has yet to deliver a feasibility study or business case for this project.
While the Victorian Government is responsible for passenger rail, the MPs believes that dedicated Commonwealth funding would help the state plan and fund vital rail upgrades.
Community support for this investment is vital. Whether you live in Geelong, Birregurra, Winchelsea, Colac, Camperdown or Warrnambool, your voice matters. Over the coming weeks, the MPs will travel by train and be at railway stations collecting signatures for their petition.
