South West Coast MP Roma Britnell has welcomed news the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club has reached agreement on a new lease.
A new 21-year lease for the Warrnambool Showgrounds site has been agreed to by all parties and will be formalised on Monday.
Mrs Britnell said it was pleasing to see a positive outcome that would allow the club to progress with its capital works program.
“The lease issue has been a long running one and was one of the first issues brought to my attention after my election as Member for South West Coast,” she said.
“I’m glad an agreement has been reached, it provides the club certainty for ongoing operations and proposed capital developments on the site, which will be of benefit for the wider community.
“Greyhound racing and training in Warrnambool and South West Coast has a long and successful history. It’s important for jobs and makes a significant economic contribution.”
Mrs Britnell said she had met with the club’s general manager and administrator several times, had raised the issue in Parliament and directly with the Minister.
“The uncertainty over the lease meant the club was having trouble progressing applications for grants, and put at risk $1.8 million allocated by Greyhound Racing Victoria,” she said.
“This agreement will mean that money is secure and the club can move forward with its plans.
“It’s a great outcome for all involved.”
