Vulnerable people in South West Coast receiving a hamper from Warrnambool and District Food Share will now have fresh milk as part of their staple items.
Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell said Food Share had raised with her fresh milk was an item missing from their hampers and she was motivated to act.
“The south-west is the country’s largest dairy production area, so to not have fresh milk regularly available in relief hampers for local people doing it tough just didn’t make sense,” Ms Britnell said.
“I have regular meetings with the major dairy companies that operate in our region, when I met with Fonterra I mentioned it and they showed interest so I linked them up with Foodshare executive officer Dedy Freebie.
“There was some back and forth, but I’m pleased I was able to work with Food Share and Fonterra to help secure this important deal.”
Ms Britnell said she knew firsthand the important work Warrnambool and District Food Share do for the entire south-west community.
“My office has a regular volunteering spot and my team and I have seen firsthand how vital the service is. In October 500 hampers went out the door to help people in need – without Foodshare, those people would have gone hungry.
“Dedy and the team volunteers do a fantastic job and work with local schools and local support organisations from across the whole region to help those in need.
“It’s an important service and one my team and I are very proud to support.”
