Labor’s actions show contempt for taxpayers

Labor has shown its contempt for the Victorian taxpayer during a fiery week on Spring Street, South West Coast MP Roma Britnell says.

The Liberal-National Coalition tried several times to bring about investigations into the rorting of taxpayer funds by the Member for Melton Don Nardella and the Member for Tarneit, Telmo Languilla.

“But Daniel Andrews and Labor blocked those attempts, which amount to condoning this rort,” Mrs Britnell said.

“This is the largest misuse of public funds by a parliamentarian in Victorian history, yet Daniel Andrews and Labor won’t ask for documents to be released so the issue can be properly investigated.

“Daniel Andrews dragged his feet when it came to condemning these rorts, going into hiding for three days. Now he wants to block the release of documents that will expose the truth and is stifling debate.

“By blocking those documents and continuing to accept the tainted vote of the Member for Melton, Daniel Andrews is condoning this rort.

“It must be properly investigated so Victorian’s can have faith in the integrity of the Parliament.”

Mrs Britnell said the second residence allowance that the Members for Tarneit and Melton rorted are for country MPs who are required to spend a considerable amount of time, in Melbourne, away from their homes for parliamentary business.

“It is not for city MPs to move outside their electorates so they can charge the taxpayer for a beachside lifestyle.”

Mrs Britnell also highlighted the hypocrisy of the Member for Melton during the week.

“Before my election, the Member for Melton stood and made all sorts of accusations about why I was standing to represent South West Coast, saying I was only doing it for the money,” she said.

“That was blatant hypocrisy, while he was accusing me of only being in this job for the money, he was living by the beach and taxpayers were paying him for that luxury.”
