Local principals in the dark about school maintenance funding

Local school principals still have no idea how much money they will receive from the state government’s $515 million maintenance funding blitz Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell says.

Ms Britnell said the Andrews Labor Government announced the funding with much media fan fair in Melbourne on Monday, but local schools are in the dark and have had minimal or no communication about their allocations.

“I’ve spoken to a number of local principals who say they have heard rumors about how much funding they can expect to receive, but there is nothing concrete from the Government,” Ms Britnell said.

“It’s not unreasonable to expect when an announcement like this is made that school principals will be given all the information at the same time, not have to read about announcements in the media, be left guessing and unable to answer questions from students and parents.

“Labor MPs have been visiting their local schools making funding announcements – but in electorates where there is a Liberal MP, it seems schools have been forgotten about and left until last to be told this important information.

“Rather than a genuine government announcement, this seems to have all the makings of a publicity stunt aimed at making Labor MPs look like heroes in their electorates.”
