Around 150 people sent a very clear message to Minister for Roads Jaala Pulford in Portland last night – that for road safety to improve, the Andrews Labor Government needs to address the shocking condition of road surfaces across the south-west.
Member for South West Coast and Shadow Minister for Rural Roads Roma Britnell said it was becoming harder and harder for the Minister to ignore the messages being sent by the community at Road Safety Forums across the state.
“The Minister keeps trying to say that road surfaces are not a major problem when it comes to road safety – but that’s not what the community is saying at these forums,” Ms Britnell said.
“The government has called these forums to hear the views of the community, but despite the community saying very clearly they want road surfaces fixed – the Minister continues to brush that view aside.
“No one is saying that road surface condition is the only factor in the tragic spike in the road toll this year, but the Minister and government need to realise people in the south-west are fearful of driving on the roads, they don’t feel safe.”
Ms Britnell said the Minister and the Labor Government must listen to what the community is saying at these forums and act to make significant improvements to road surfaces in the south-west.
