Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell says community groups and the environment will be the big winners under a Liberal Nationals plan to introduce a Container Deposit Scheme.
Ms Britnell said a Michael O’Brien led Liberal National Government would introduce the scheme which will reduce litter and help clubs and groups fundraise.
“Victorians have been calling for a Cash for Containers scheme for years, so we’ve listened and made this commitment,” Ms Britnell said.
“In other states with a similar scheme, sporting and community groups have been the big winners using the money to invest in new equipment and infrastructure.
“It will mean less waste going to landfill, better recycling and a new source of revenue for sporting and community groups.
“Our Cash for Containers scheme will be designed in consultation with industry, including manufacturers, retailers, and hospitality providers, to maximize community benefits.”
Ms Britnell said cash for containers complimented the Liberal Nationals previously announced Zero to Landfill policy – which aims to stop household waste going to landfill by building a waste-to-energy facility, creating an affordable, low emissions baseload energy source.
“These are real solutions to the waste crisis which Victoria is facing,” Ms Britnell said.
“While the Andrews Labor Government drags its feet, the Liberal Nationals are developing solutions that will make a real difference to the environment, while helping solve the waste crisis.”
