Rally shows community supports our farmers

South West Coast MP Roma Britnell says Wednesday’s rally on Parliament House shows the huge amount rally2of community support for Australian agriculture.

Mrs Britnell met the rally on the steps of Parliament House and spoke with many who attended.

She said while the current dairy crisis meant people were doing it tough, it was hearting to see the community backing their plight.

“I am so proud of Australian consumers who are showing they value the hard work of dairy farmers and they value high quality Australian produce,” Mrs Britnell said.

“It shows people won’t tolerate supermarkets selling that high quality product for less than it costs to make it. rally1

“I hope the supermarkets are receiving this message loud and clear and will back away from their bully tactics and renegotiate their contracts and show real support for our farmers.”

Mrs Britnell also spoke in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, welcoming the government’s support package for dairy farmers, but saying more needed to be done to truly back agricultural businesses.

“Our roads are crumbling, the costs of truck repairs are being passed onto farmers. There are bridges which tankers can’t cross because they haven’t been assessed by VicRoads,” she said.

“It means trucks are taking the long way around, adding to transport costs, which are then passed back to farmers.rally3

“An increase on the brown coal tax is also driving electricity prices up, meaning, again, farmers are facing increased costs.

“The government needs to leave the city and see what impacts their city-centric policies are doing to regional areas.”
