Return of PDH birthing service a positive step

Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell has welcomed the reopening Portland District Health’s birthing service.

Ms Britnell said the service’s return on Wednesday, after being suspended on March 16, would be welcome relief for expectant mothers and their families in the Portland region.

“This is a vital service for the Portland region,” she said.

“To have a situation where expectant mothers and their families had to travel to Warrnambool or Hamilton to have their babies was unacceptable.

“I sincerely hope this service now remains in place and there are no more suspensions or closures.”

Ms Britnell said she remained concerned about the long-term future and viability of full maternity services at Portland District Health.

“PDH says it is working with a consultant and new community group to explore new models for maternity services in Portland, which on the face of it is a positive step,” she said.

“However, the devil will be in the detail. What we don’t want is a scaled-back service that might tick some boxes with the Department of Health from an economic standpoint but doesn’t meet the needs of the community.”
