Water safety on the Peninsula paramount

The lives of Victorians are in danger as irresponsible jet ski riders have taken over beaches along the Mornington Peninsular.

This summer, the lives of countless holiday makers have been endangered by the careless and dangerous behaviour of some jet ski riders at the Mornington Peninsula’s iconic beaches.

Since 2018 the Mornington Peninsular Shire Council have implored the Andrews Government to address the irresponsible behaviour of some jet ski riders who openly flout the rules endangering the lives of beachgoers. The Council’s pleas have been repeatedly ignored by the Andrews Labor Government.

“Victorians are scared to venture into the water this summer as the marine safety rules are not being enforced” Shadow Minister for Boating and Fishing Roma Britnell said.

“For generations of Victorians, a beach holiday along the Mornington Peninsular is an annual event. Now this is at risk as holiday makers and locals alike are reluctant to enter the water” Member for Nepean Sam Groth stated.

“The Andrews Government must act urgently to expand swimming only zones and introduce personal watercraft only pathway zones for jet skis along the Mornington Peninsular. These are just two of the many options available to the Government to make our beaches safer.” Mr Groth said.

Marine Safety Victoria and Victoria Water Police are charged with responsibility for enforcing Victoria’s marine safety rules.

“The Andrews Government has failed to adequately resource Marine Safety Victoria and the Victoria Water Police to enable them to do their job of keeping Victorians safe in the water. The people of Victoria deserve better” Ms Britnell said.
