Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell has urged the State Government to work cooperatively with the Federal Government to ensure assistance reaches dairy farmers as quickly as possible.
As the end of the financial year approaches the effects of world price drop are beginning to bite and the first milk cheques will be starting to arrive.
“The state government is responsible for administering the federal assistance program. My concern is if the State Government doesn’t work with the Federal Government it will create more stress for my fellow dairy farmers.
“It’s disappointing to learn the Victorian Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford is yet to pick up the phone to Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce to discuss how the package can be rolled out as quick as possible.”
Mrs Britnell said it was important everyone remained vigilant and looked out for each other.
“I’ve suggested to Minister Pulford there needs to be a system of support in place so service providers, financial counsellors and farmers can work together,” she said.
“We all must work together to help and support farmers through this world milk price slump.
“For those who are struggling, the Federal Government’s Farm Household Allowance of up to $952.80 per fortnight for a couple is available immediately from Centrelink subject to qualifying.
“The Federal Government also has a $30 million package on the table for Victoria until July 1 and a further $500 million available after that date as part of its support package.
“I urge Minister Pulford to stop playing political games, pick up the phone and get the package rolling out so farmers can get the help they need.”
